Result: Cape Town City 1-0 Polokwane City

Date: 12 August 2017

Venue: Cape Town Stadium

Benni McCarthy got his Cape Town City reign off to a winning start, as they recorded a 1-0 win over Polokwane City in their MTN8 tie on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts got off to an encouraging start, as the attacking players combined well although chances were hard to come by.

Polokwane, meanwhile, were quite content to allow City to have the ball,  while they looked threatening on the break with Rodney Ramagalela and Vusi Mngomezulu.

After a quiet spell in the half, Benni McCarthy's charges took the lead courtesy of own goal from Sibusiso Mbobani, who headed the ball into his own net in the 38th minute.

George Chigova then came to Polokwane's rescue three minutes as the Zimbabwean shot-stopper rushed off his line to deny Lyle Lakay in a one-on-one situation.

Nevertheless, the hosts went into the halftime break with a one-goal advantage while goalkeeper, Shu-Aib Walters endured a quiet opening 45 minutes.

City continued to dominate in the opening exchanges of the second half, but they were let down by the decision-making in the final third.

McCarthy opted for a change in the 65th minute as Ayanda Patosi made his debut, replacing Sibusiso Masina.

The home side should have doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Lebogang Manyama played Lehlohonolo Majoro through on goal, but the latter fired straight Chigova.

Rise and Shine responded with an attacking change as Thobani Mncwango replaced Puleng Tlolane.

McCarthy threw on Mpho Matsi and Ebrahim Seedat in the closing stages, as City held on for the win to secure their spot in the semi-finals for the second successive season.

Here's how they lined up:

CT City: 1. Walters, 2. Mkhize, 16. Johannes, 27. Gumede, 5. Edmilson, 19. Putsche, 8. Manyama (Seedat 90), 26 Nodada, 7. Lakay, 24. Masina, (Patosi 65') 45. Majoro.

Polokwane: 1. Chigova, 2. Semenya, 24. Hlongwane, 22. Mbonani, 4. Tshilo, 21. Seabi (Maluleke 80'), 16. Mngomezulu, 20. Phiri, 17. Ramagalela, 8. Maluleke, 10. Tlolane (Mncwango 77').

Majoro should have done better, he missed a lot of good opportunities to find the back of the net.
